Game of Thrones Season 5 has everyone buzzing with excitement once again about the nuances of adventure, betrayal and intrigue in this world and others. And now, with Minecraft more popular than ever, some may be wondering how they can turn their favorite map in Minecraft into a Game of Thrones style RPG sandbox. Well, I’m here to tell you that with the right game mods you can!
After doing some research, I came across a few epic additions that bring the world of Game of Thrones to life right in your Minecraft game. By combining the creative efforts of the team at WesterosCraft and a young modder named LeonardohJ4, you too can have this amazing world available at your fingertips.
The Map and Resource Pack
To dive into the world of Game of Thrones, it’s necessary to have a proper map of the universe. Thankfully the hard work has already been taken care of. A project called WesterosCraft has been in the works for three years and has provided a few maps available for download, allowing players an immersive experience in GRRM’s epic universe, be it Kings Landing, Winterfell, or The Dreadfort. I went ahead and downloaded the King’s Landing Map from their website and installed it into my Minecraft and I must say that at first glance I was . . . blown away. The city looks just like a pixelated version of the King’s Landing we love and dread from the TV Show and it is enormous. Luckily, I started the game in Creative Mode so I was able to fly around and give my full appreciation to the architecture that went into creating this map.
My first goal, of course, was to find The Red Keep and see how the creators of this map interpreted the home of the Lannisters. After some flying around and after allowing this very detailed map a minute to finish loading in my game browser, I was able to find the infamous castle myself and boy, does it look good. Not only is the exterior detailed exactly like it is in the show, but the interior is phenomenal as well. I spent a good 20 minutes exploring all the nooks and crannies of the castle, finding myself lost more than once. Of course, I really wanted to find the Iron Throne and I almost rejoiced out loud when I finally stumbled upon the Great Hall. Lo’ and behold, the Iron Throne was situated right at the head of the hall and like any true GOT fan, I couldn’t resist walking my Minecraft character right up to it. I even let him sit in it for a bit (Shhhh).
One noticeable thing about the more common buildings in these maps is that while the exterior looks amazing, many of them lack any sort of interior. This leaves plenty to do for the ambitious and completionist among us. So if you’re the creative-builder-type, you have the opportunity to really dig into some Westerosi interior design and truly customize your Game of Thrones Minecraft experience.
The Resource Pack
This map will work fine with the vanilla Minecraft default Resource Pack, but if you want to experience it the way the map creators intended, downloading the Resource Pack from their site is the way to go. This Resource Pack was created and customized by the team at WesterosCraft to pair perfectly with their maps. Plus, downloading this Resource Pack into your game is SUPER easy, giving you the ultimate view of your favorite locations in GRRM’s universe.
The Mod
But what if you want to take your Minecraft game to the next level, with characters, factions and weapons from the series itself? To truly experience Game of Thrones in Minecraft, one player has taken it a step further and has created the ultimate Game of Thrones mod for Minecraft.
Inspired by the now famous Lord of the Rings Mod, a player named LeonardohJ4 developed a similar mod using elements from Game of Thrones and it is epic! This mod includes characters and weapons from the universe, as well as dimensions (like Essos and Beyond the Wall) and biome-specific features. The best part is that he’s still rolling out more content to make it even better. I reached out to LeonardohJ4 and asked him how close he was to declaring the mod finished and his response was that “it’s impossible for it to be finished until the last two books come out, so it has a long way to go”.
I went ahead and downloaded this mod to my computer as well and was blown away by all the features.
Factions
There are over 15 joinable factions, including House Baratheon, House Lannister, House Stark and House Targaryen. Specific to certain biomes, these factions can only be joined if you’ve wandered far enough to encounter them in their homeland or any other biomes that are friendly to that faction. Finding the Faction isn’t enough, however, as players will have to craft Faction Join Papers to be accepted as one of the Faction’s own, making it a more challenging aspect of the mod.
Mobs
Besides Factions, there are over 60 mobs specific to the mod as well. After sifting through some of the new characters in creative mode, I was amazed to find that this mod includes such character-types as Unsullied Soldiers, Children of the Forest and Faceless Men, as well as more well-known character-types like men of the Knights Watch, Dothraki, and Wildlings. The mod even includes mobs such as Direwolves, Giants and Mammoths, all of which are enormous!
Weapons and Armor
Avid Fans of the series may recognize some of the weapons and armor added to this mod as well. Depending on the Faction you choose to join, different armor sets become available for you to request. Iconic swords such as Ice, Needle, and Oathbreaker have also been included in the mod, so fans of the series can get into character and explore the known world as their favorite scheming, backstabbing, throne-chaser.
Putting It All Together
Setting up the map, resource pack, and mod on your computer might seem like a daunting task but if you’re up for it, it should only take about 10 minutes. To make your life a little easier, I wrote up a quick How-To Guide to get you started adding these features to your own game.
Installing the Mod
The first thing you need to do to play this mod is to install Minecraft Forge. However, note that you won’t be able to run Minecraft Forge for Minecraft version 1.8, so in order to run Forge, you will first need to change the version of Minecraft you’re running to 1.6.4 by opening the Minecraft app on your computer, clicking Edit Profile, and then selecting 1.6.4 from the Versions menu. Once this is done click Play to commit these changes.
Add remove windows components windows 7. Also, because this mod doesn’t work on the latest version of Forge, you will need to make sure that you download Forge 9.1.1 for Minecraft 1.6.4. This will ensure that the mod works correctly after you’ve installed it to your computer. To install, just click on the “Install Client” radio button and hit OK to download the appropriate libraries.
Next, it’s important to open the Minecraft app on your computer once again and change your profile to “Forge” and then hit “Play.” You will notice that there is now a “Mods” option on the menu screen. Close out Minecraft once again and move on to the next step.
Once Forge is completely installed, install the latest Minecraft A Song of Ice and Fire Mod on your computer. Depending on whether you’re using a Mac or a PC, the file format should be either a .jar or a .zip file.
Then, if you’re on a Windows computer, open the Minecraft folder by clicking the Start Menu, open Run, then type: %appdata%.minecraft and click Run.
If you’re using a Mac computer, open Finder and click on the “Go” button located on the top menu bar. From there click, “Go to Folder” and type in ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft.
Once you’ve located the correct folder, navigate to the “Mods” folder and drag and drop the new Minecraft mod folder (with a .zip or .jar extension) into this folder and you’ll be all set! Just run Minecraft once again and click on that new “Mods” button and be sure to select the Game of Thrones Mod.
The mod should now be installed on your computer. However, if you want a map of the world you will still need to install the Game of Thrones map from the WesterosCraft website. You’ll have the choice of downloading either Kings Landing, The Dreadfort, or Winterfell on their site.
Installing the Map
To install the custom map after its downloaded from the WesterosCraft site, you’ll need to extract the RAR files with a tool like 7-Zip (if you’re on PC) or Rar Extractor (if you’re using a Mac). Once this is done you’ll have a folder that you can now drag into the Minecraft Saves folder. This folder is also located in the Minecraft folder that I’ve explained how to get to in the section above. After this is done, you should have no problem loading the map in Minecraft and playing Game of Thrones!
Installing the Resource Pack
Lastly, to complete the Game of Thrones Minecraft experience, you’ll want to download the Game of Thrones Resource Pack from WesterosCraft. Once it’s downloaded, just open Minecraft, hit Play and click on Options. Following this, press the Resource Packs button and then “Open the resource pack folder”. Lastly, just drag and drop the Resource Pack that you want into the folder and you should be able to select it from the Resource Packs menu right away.
Work is well underway on a Game of Thrones mod for Kingdom Come Deliverance for PC.
The popular Seven Kingdoms mod is being adapted to Warhorse’s medieval RPG, with work completed on some early House Stark armour.
The popular Seven Kingdoms mod is being adapted to Warhorse’s medieval RPG, with work completed on some early House Stark armour.
The mod hopes to include all the major factions from Game of Thrones. House Stark, House Lannister, House Tully, House Frey, House Bracken, House Brax, House Blackwood, House Karstark, House Bolton, House Glover, House Whent, House Crakehall, House Lefford and the Brotherhood Without Banners will all be represented.
“The main goal is to recreate an open-world for players to explore during the War of the Five Kings,” say the mod’s creators.
“A main story-driven campaign will be created if the development tools support it, and we won’t have an idea until the SDK is released. Keep in mind this would require a very large number of voice actors, animators, and scripters, potentially lengthening development for a significant period of time.”
The Seven Kingdoms mod was last used for Attila: Total War but was limited by buggy custom maps and no campaign.

“The open-world and story-driven aspects of [Kingdom Come Deliverance] are better suited to the Game of Thrones universe, giving us much more potential for new features and gameplay modes. Most importantly, Warhorse Studios stands behind the modding community and has been very vocal about supporting mods,” said the mod team.
Seven Kingdoms mod
Seven Kingdoms is based on the Game of Thrones TV series rather than the books, and as well as weapons and armour is also likely to feature some of the same characters.
“The mod will be centered in the Riverlands during the War of the Five Kings,” detailed the modders. “This location was selected because it closely resembles the visuals of the KC:D game (trees, buildings, etc.) and is best suited to the original game’s storyline.
“Dozens of armies were present in this hotly contested area (Stark, Lannister, Tully, Bracken, Karstark, etc.) along with gangs of bandits and freeriders roaming the countryside. With two warring sides, dangerous no-man’s-land, and civilians caught in the middle between it all, it’s a content-rich environment and the ideal location for an open-world mod.”

In fact, the best Game of Thrones release to date is probably the social game, Ascent – although we have high hopes for Telltale’s game and Bigpoint’s MMORPG.
In the meantime, the fantasy universe provides an enormous treasure trove of lore for modders to leverage in full conversion mods. Here are some of the most promising.
A Clash of Kings
A Clash of Kings
Base game: Mount & Blade: Warband
Released: September 2012
Last ModDB update: June 2014 (dev update)
ModDB user rating: 9
A medieval combat sim, Mount & Blade provides a great base for a Game of Thrones game. Warband, which has more focus on putting together an army, is even better suited to the franchise’s famous factionism and political skullduggery.
Although it’s far from the only Mount & Blade conversion, A Clash of Kings is a particularly fine example that deserves top billing on our list. Set during the eponymous second novel, A Clash of Kings is played on all new Westeros and Essos maps peopled by 20 factions and made beautiful with new textures and terrain.
Players hire mercenaries, including the mighty Unsullied, and form bonds of companionship with famous Game of Thrones characters. The attention to detail is laudable, with 80 custom locations, new banners and map icons, and over 1,000 items.
Best Game Of Thrones Games
Not content with a visual makeover, A Clash of Kings introduces sea travel, 26 new scripted events, unique quests, random events, and eventually the arrival of a mysterious invading faction.
Regularly updated by a champion team of volunteers, A Clash of Kings is probably the best Game of Thrones action experience out there. It’s a single-player affair only, alas.
Crusader Kings 2: A Game of Thrones
Crusader Kings 2: A Game of Thrones
Base game: Crusader Kings 2
Released: May 2012
Last ModDB update: June 2014 (files)
ModDB user rating: 9.6
Crusader Kings 2 is another no-brainer for a Game of Thrones conversion, because the two properties have so much in common – backstabbing, dynasties, twisted family relationships, political machinations.
Crusader Kings 2: A Game of Thrones is a full conversion and covers events from 300 years prior to Aegon’s conquest of Westeros to the beginning of the fourth novel, A Feast for Crows.
As well as playing out on a custom map populated by the factions you’d expect to see in the Game of Thrones world, the mod makes subtle changes to the Crusader Kings 2 formula. Kingdoms don’t go to war against each other so much as struggle to obtain one goal – the Iron Throne.
Other changes are bolder; there’s a duelling system so you can put down your foes personally, pets, and more opportunities to interact with other characters.
As with Crusader Kings 2, once you start the simulation you can’t expect it to follow “real” historical events, so you’ll need to know your lore to get the most out of the mod.
CK2:AGOT supports both single- and multiplayer and is available for Linux and Mac as well as PC. The ModDB page is no longer actively updated but new builds are released there regularly, and the mod’s forums are still active and welcoming.
Next: two more promising Game of Thrones mods.
A Game of Thrones is a mod for Crusader Kings II, created by CK2:AGOT Development Team.
What is this mod about?
A Game of Thrones (AGOT) is a full-conversion mod for Paradox Interactive’s Crusader Kings II (CK2). Set in the world of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire (ASoIaF) fantasy saga where lords great and small vie for control over the lands of Ice and Fire, from Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms in the west, to Qarth in the east. The mod takes its name from the first book in the series, as well as the “game” of plots and politics the ambitious and hopeful are said to be playing in their struggles for supremacy. Currently players are able to choose to play from any start date in the 300 years from before the Aegon's Conquest to the beginning of the fourth book (A Feast for Crows).
What makes this mod different from Crusader Kings II?
Besides the obvious, which is a new interactive rendition of the fictional low-fantasy medieval setting of ASoIaF, you’ll notice a host of changes that build off the framework of the original (vanilla) CK2 game. In CK2, players battle against other rulers for control of various independent realms and kingdoms. In AGOT, while the potential exists for the realm to fragment into multiple kingdoms, in practice it very rarely happens. Players instead fight to control just one throne – the Iron Throne, forged by Aegon I Targaryen “the Conqueror” almost three centuries prior to the events of this saga. Additionally, events from CK2 have been adapted to fit within the lore and flavour of A Song of Ice and Fire. Some notable new features to mention; A new dueling engine so that lords may fight each other in personal combat on (or off) the battlefield; An all-new method for personal interaction between characters; Pets that (sometimes greatly) aid characters in battle; And a host of less significant (but no less important) features that together help create a solid and serious effort at bringing Westeros to life for gamers. The mod also utilizes features from various other mods, listed in detail in the credits section.
While CK2 and AGOT contain Role-Playing (RP) elements, this mod is not a full narrative recreation of the books. Just like CK2 and other grand strategies, the mod is dynamic in allowing players the freedom of exploring “What If?” scenarios. What if Robb captured King’s Landing? What if Stannis and Renly joined forces against Joffrey? What if Rhaegar Targaryen had killed Robert on the Trident instead of the other way around? All these things can, and may, happen in the mod, with or without the player’s choice. No game will ever be the same, whether you win or you die.
This mod offers an installer.
